The Ohio State University’s relationship with Abrasive Technology (AT), a global manufacturer of superabrasive products headquartered in Lewis Center, Ohio, has grown significantly over the last two years as a result of viewing AT’s needs from a ”One University” perspective.  Today, the partnership integrates multiple departments within the Colleges of Engineering, Dentistry, Business, and Arts & Sciences.  Key catalysts to the formation of this alliance include the insights and actions of OSU alumnus, Josh Dudley, AT Research Development & Engineering, and the ”holistic“ relationship management focus of The Ohio State University Industry Liaison Office (ILO).

Companies are now discovering the real value of a more empirical approach to why certain marketing strategies are more successful than others. For Dr. Ellen Peters, faculty member of the Psychology Department at The Ohio State University, the science of choosing is her research focus. “Consumers often do not know what they want,” she explained. “They ‘construct’ preferences based on their feelings and on easily available cues in the situation. They can then make very quick decisions, but those decisions can be biased.” Peters said that psychology plays a big role in these decisions.

“Nothing in the past 50 years has changed the energy supply picture in the U.S. as rapidly as shale energy (often considered to be part of what is called ‘unconventional’ oil and gas by the petroleum industry),” said Jeff Daniels, Co-director for The Ohio State University Subsurface Energy Resource Center (SERC). “The ability to produce natural gas and oil from shale came about as a result of combining horizontal drilling with hydraulic fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing has been around for over 50 years as a routine method for enhancing oil production. Horizontal drilling came on the scene fairly recently (arguably 5 to 10 years ago).” Recent news that eastern Ohio’s natural gas deposits could be worth over $20 billion was big news when Ohio Gov. John Kasich discussed the associated jobs potential the shale industry represents.

Jeff Daniels, Co-Director, The Ohio State University Subsurface Energy Resource Center

Innovation needs to be more than a buzzword that companies use to build an image.  Innovation needs to be managed in an aggressive and savvy manner, so that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can turn their very important problems and opportunities into profitable growth. Recognizing this critical management need, the Federal government’s NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) network has partnered with Eureka! Ranch and Merwyn Research to help companies understand and implement a structured Innovation Engineering Management System  (IEMS) that helps companies to accelerate the process of creating, communicating, and commercializing innovation.
